Talk of organ donation swirled around her hospital room as she lay in a coma. No one would sign the consent. She woke up two months later at the Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital in Lincoln, Neb. "I grew up with five brothers," she said. "I've always been a fighter." At first, she couldn't recognize family members, let alone remember what happened. Previously, doctors believed that the maximum window for recovery was about a year after the injury occurred. But new research suggests the TBI-recovery timeline is longer than previously thought, giving injured athletes more opportunity to restore cognitive functions.
