Terri's "Wish"

Home > Terri's Story > Terri's "Wish"

The following is a time line of Terri Schiavo’s alleged verbal wishes which were used to decide her fate. Florida Circuit Judge, George W. Greer ruled to starve and dehydrate Terri to death based on hearsay evidence that surfaced almost eight years after her collapse. This hearsay testimony was provided by Michael Schiavo, his brother and his sister-in-law – ignoring testimony by Terri’s biological family and lifelong friends to the contrary. According to Michael Schiavo and his family, Terri would have had to make these alleged wishes when she was in her early twenties.

----------------------------------

1990, February 25 – At the age of 26, Terri collapses for still unknown reasons, while home alone with Michael Schiavo. Terri has no written directive. Schiavo makes no mention that Terri had any type of verbal living will.

1992, November – During medical malpractice trial Michael Schiavo recites his wedding vows in front of a jury asking for upwards of 20 million dollars. The malpractice trial was initiated by Schiavo holding Terri's physicians - before her collapse - responible for her condition. Schiavo is suing Terri's physicans for this money so that he could provide Terri with the proper lifelong rehabilitation and therapy she is going to need. Schiavo also testifies that he intends to bring Terri home. There is still no mention that Terri had any kind of verbal living will. Jury personally awards Schiavo $600,000 and establishes a Medical Trust for Terri for close to 1.5 million dollars for her future rehabilitation and therapy (Note: Michael Schiavo is the inheritor of Terri’s Trust).

1993, February 14 – A split occurs between Michael Schiavo and Terri's parents, Robert and Mary Schindler, after Terri's parents confront Schiavo asking him when he is going to provide the rehabilitaion and therapy that he not only promised the jury but to Terri and her family.

1993, Spring – Subsequent to fallout, Schiavo places DNR in Terri's medical records, and instructs nursing home not to reveal any medical information regarding Terri to her family.

1993, Summer – Schiavo begins relationship with Jodi Centonze.

1993, Summer – Schiavo instructs Terri's
physician
not to treat her UT infection that would ultimately lead to her death by sepsis.  Nursing home intervenes, informing Schiavo that Florida laws do not permit the withholding of treatment.

1993, November – Schiavo is deposed and testifies that he withheld antibiotics in the hopes that Terri would die stating that, "It’s what I  think Terri would want", and "In my own feelings, if Terri were to wake up and see herself the way she is now, she wouldn’t even want to live like that." Schiavo never mentions that it was Terri's so-called wish.

1994, Fall – Schiavo proposes to Jodi Centzone.

1995 – Schiavo begins cohabitating with Centzone (Schiavo eventually fathers two children with Centzone).

1995, December – Schiavo makes initial contact with Attorney George Felos.

1997, May – George Felos informs court that Schiavo will begin procedures to remove Terri's feeding tube asking courts permission for his fees to be paid for by Terri's Trust.

1997, July – Schiavo’s mother, Clare Schiavo passes away. Schiavo publicly announces, in his mother’s obituary, his intentions to marry Jodi Centonze. Schiavo was still married to Terri and no mention of Terri was made in obituary. In addition, during the 2000 trial to determined Terri’s fate, Schiavo testifies that it was only after his mother’s death that he decided to remove Terri’s feeding tube. This contradicts the fact that Felos had already began court procedures to remove Terri's feeding tube months before Schiavo’s mother passed away.

1998, August – Schiavo officially petitions the court to remove Terri’s feeding tube now stating; "It was Terri's wish  that she wouldn’t want to live in this condition."

1998, Summer – Court appoints Guardian ad Litem (GAL), Attorney Richard Pearse, to investigate the merits of  Schiavo’s petition to remove Terri’s feeding tube. GAL asks Schiavo during his investigation if he knows of anyone else having any knowledge in regards to Terri’s alleged wishes stating that she wants to die.  Schiavo tells GAL -- No.

1998, December – After several months of investigating the merits of Schiavo's petition, GAL submits his report to the court recommending that the petition to remove Terri’s feeding tube to be denied. GAL based his report on what he felt was Schiavo’s lack of credibility regarding the fact that it took almost eight years for Terri's wishes to surface. GAL also noted that he was troubled that Schiavo was going to inherit Terri’s Trust worth close to $800,000 at that time.

1999, Spring – Florida Law changed now recognizing feeding tubes as medical treatment (artificial life support). Schiavo’s attorney, George Felos directly involved in the effort to change law.

1999, September – During Schaivo’s deposition in preparation for upcoming trial to remove Terri’s feeding tube, Felos asks Schiavo if there is anyone that has knowledge of Terri making comments regarding her wishes. Schiavo now says that his brother Scott Schiavo and sister-in-law Joan Schiavo have knowlegde of Terris' "wishes".

2000, February 11 – Subsequent to a week long trial, Judge George W. Greer rules that the testimony of Schiavo, Scott Schiavo and Joan Schiavo meet the Florida clear and convincing standard to permit the removal of Terri’s feeding tube. Greer dismisses the testimony of Terri’s parents, and siblings contradicting Schiavo and his family. Greer also ignores Terri’s twenty-year childhood friend and her closest friend in Florida, both testifying that Terri never said anything about wanting to die by starvation and dehydration if she ever became disabled.

2001, April – Cindy Brashers (Shook) tells Terri’s father, and brother in a phone conversation that Schiavo is lying about Terri’s wishes and that Schiavo told Shook back in 1991 when they were dating that, "He had no idea what Terri’s wishes were."

2001, May – Trudy Capone submits affidavit essentially repeating what was said by Shook and that Schiavo did not know what Terri wishes were (Trudy Capone and Schiavo dated just prior to his relationship with Jodi Centonze).

2005, March 31 – Terri dies of marked dehydration after almost 14 days of being denied food and water based on the decision by Judge George W. Greer that it was Terri’s wish.
